Our Story

Boys & Girls Clubs of America had its beginnings in 1860 with three women in Hartford, Conn.: Mary Goodwin,Alice Goodwin and Elizabeth Hammersley. Believing that boys who roamed the streets should have a positive alternative, they organized the first Club. A cause was born.

Now in military bases all around the world and with some 22 countries receiving guidance from the Movement, are now implementing Boys & Girls Clubs type of programming.

In recent years, organizations from around the world have increased their efforts to offer out of school time options to ALL youth with special concern for those most in need of those services. With guidance and support from Boys & Girls Clubs of America, a number of worldwide leaders have launched or are launching their own brand of Boys & Girls Clubs. There is quite a bit going on, so please feel free to Join Us! by submitting your information or visiting the organization for your country of choice.

This service includes but is not limited to vetting inquiries as well as providing “start-up”, “how to steps” and “sustainability questions” to consider when moving forward. Through skype, emails, calls and other electronic means as well as occasional on the ground support BGCA International Services shares their expertise and experiences to assist country leaders to think through areas such as working with or without their local governments involvement, potential traditional and non-traditional facilities, partnerships, staffing and volunteer needs, safety, establishing a board, exploring potential public and private local revenue sources, financial accountability, transparency and brand protection. Additionally a lot is done in the areas of program training, access to program curriculums/materials and helping them think through how to best measure outcomes and impact.

These organizations are NOT Military based Clubs and they are NOT Chartered Club sites. BGCA continues to be a good Global Citizen.
